Hy on the Fringe: Your Personal Guide to the
2012 New York International Fringe Festival
And the FringeNYC September Encore Series

Some of the biggest, splashiest, and most enjoyable shows at the festival are musicals. A fatal mistake of many aspiring musical writers is focusing on the songs and neglecting the book (i.e., the story and dialogue). The following are some musicals that will hopefully be strong on both.
FringeNYC 2012 musicals Independents and Mother Eve's Secret Garden of Sensual Sisterhood
•
Independents: Twentysomething pot smugglers
have a coming-of-age adventure on a ship from America's Revolutionary War. According
to The Yale
Daily News, “The genius of Independents lies in its seamless
interweaving of drunken party scenes with moments of startling clarity and contemplation.”
• Mother Eve's Secret Garden of Sensual Sisterhood: Ashley Wren Collins proves she can do pretty much anything in this musical for which she sings, dances, choreographs the numbers, and even designs some of the costumes. Most important, she demonstrates an energetic gift for comedic acting—and is likely to be one of the stand-out stars of the festival. (The eight other cast members are fine too.) So if you come for the performances, you're likely to have fun. The show's content is more of a mixed bag; based on a version I saw last year, there's a tad too many puns and over-the-top moments. But even so, by the ending you'll probably be smilling.
